About
The Frisian lakes area is a vast sailing area perfect for a sailing trip spanning one or more days on a traditional ship with a group of friends, family members or colleagues. The scenery alternates between the various lakes, spectacular countryside and elegant villages. Heading through Lemmer from the IJsselmeer, you’ll soon find yourself on the Frisian lakes. On Fluessen, Slotermeer and Sneekermeer you can get actively involved in the sailing, though you can also choose to chill out on deck as you drift along. At the end of a day’s sailing you could stay moored at one of the many berths available out in the countryside. Your sailing trip on the Frisian lakes will combine perfectly with a visit to Friesland’s cities, such as Sloten, Sneek or the province’s cultural capital Leeuwarden. Finally, you’ll sail out through Stavoren and back onto the IJsselmeer. There you can set course for one of the Frisian cities on the coast, such as Workum and Makkum, or sail on towards Enkhuizen.

Frisian lakes
Sailing on the Frisian lakes
The Frisian lakes are situated in the province of Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. They were created by the removal of layers of peat, peat fires, peat extraction, drainage for the purposes of agriculture and the closure of an arm of the sea. The lakes are interconnected by means of canals of various sizes, giving rise to an expansive sailing area and making it easy to sail from one lake to another. From the water you’ll have a fantastic view of the varied landscape and you’ll be treated to some unique vistas.
Discover a different city around the Frisian lakes each and every day
Nature, art, culture. Friesland has plenty to offer. Lonely Planet even ranked the province as number three in its top ten ‘Best in Europe’ places for 2018. During your sailing trip you’ll be able to visit a different Frisian town every evening. There are plenty of historic cities lining the water. These include Sneek, one of Friesland’s eleven cities, with its magnificent historic centre. It’s also famous for Sneekweek, the largest sailing event on inland waters. But you could also moor in the city centre of Leeuwarden, European City of Culture 2018. A variety of events are being staged, a visit to the Museum of Friesland is definitely worth the effort, and there are plenty of cafés and restaurants in the old city centre.
Stop off for a swim in the countryside en route
The Frisian lakes also have a lot of berths available out in the countryside, such as at Konijneneiland in Lake Fluessen. You can moor at this uninhabited island for a swim or a quick kickabout with the football. But you could also spend the night in these berths. That way, you’ll experience Friesland at its best, and find peace and quiet surrounded by nature.
