The Edams Museum
The museum will take you on a journey through the rich history of Edam. Shipbuilding, industry, architecture, the most powerful and richest families and everyday life are part of the museum and give you the feeling of traveling back in time. If you want to visit the museum, it is important to know that the museum has two locations: The first location is the Steenen Coopmanshuys and the other in the City Hall of Edam.
History of the museum
The town hall from 1337 is located near the merchant's house, on the other side of the Damsluis. It is built in the heavy, pompous and symmetrical style of Louis XIV.
Steenen Coopmanshuys was built between 1540 and 1550 and was the first stone merchant's house in Edam. Furthermore, the natural stone frames in the front facade, the walls of brick and a floor seem to be a very rich house for the year 1550. In 1893 the Coopmanshuys was auctioned publicly, after the last owner of the house was deceased. The municipality bought the building and in 1895 became a museum.
The floating cellar
Het Steenen Coopmanshuys is also known abroad for its 'floating cellar'. It is a watertight container that floats on water and thus moves up and down. You can move the container with your foot to hear the water.
