Harlingen Beach
Harlingen is not only a bustling port city, it also has a beautiful and cosy recreational beach. The perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun and the view of the Wadden Sea and Harlingen harbour after a day of sailing.
The beach on the Westerzeedijk
There are several beaches in Harlingen, each with its own charm and facilities. The beach on the Westerzeedijk, also called the 'Zeedijk', is Harlingen's best-known and most popular beach and is just a 10-minute walk from the port. The beach was created in 1997 when the canal was deepened for the salt industry. The sandy beach is wide with plenty of space for sunbathing, playing and walking, and the beach also has several catering outlets.
Relax and enjoy
Besides relaxation and water fun, Harlingen beach offers even more entertainment. For instance, you can take a walk along the coastline and enjoy the view of the Wadden Sea and the passing ships. There is also playground equipment for children and a beach volleyball court for those who want to be sporty.
On Harlingen beach, it is also possible to swim. Although there are no official swimming zones demarcated and supervised, the shallow waters and ebb and flow mean that the water is usually calm and safe. Still, it is advisable to pay close attention and only swim if you feel comfortable doing so.
In the summer months, dogs must be kept on a leash; from September to April, the beach is an off-leash area.
