Lighthouse Marken
On the eastern tip of Marken stands the 16 meter tall lighthouse. The lighthouse is also called the Paard van Marken (horse of Marken). This lighthouse is currently still inhabited.
History of the lighthouse in Marken
In 1700 the tower started as a beacon for Marken. In this time there were two other lighthouses that showed the way from the Waddenzee to Amsterdam. In 1839 the fire beacon was replaced by an iron copy. Later a brick house and storage place was built next to it. The current lighthouse was designed by J. Valk who also designed the lighthouse on Urk. Since 1970 the lighthouse has been a national monument.
About the lighthouse in Marken
The Marken lighthouse is a striking white structure with a red colored lightwork. A bricked stone with weapons, dolphins and the date 1700 are details, left over from earlier times. The lighthouse has, among other things, a fog bell and a fog horn so that ships can also sail from A to B in fog.
