About
At the top of the Vuurboets dune stands the lighthouse of Vlieland. This is also called 'Vuurduin (Fire Dune)' or 'Red Dwarf' because of its location, size and color. The lighthouse is not so high, but thanks to the high dune, the tower seems almost 60 meters above sea level. Enjoy a fantastic view over Oost-Vlieland, the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. You can buy souvenirs from the viewing platform next to the tower.

Dimensions and years
The lighthouse is 18 meters high, but due to the 40 meters high dune, the tower only seems to be 60 meters above sea level. From the lighthouse you can enjoy the fantastic panorama over the village Oost-Vlieland, the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. The tower was built in 1909 on Vlieland, before did its service in IJmuiden as a lighthouse. In 1929, next to the lighthouse, a viewing platform was built on wooden posts and in 1986 the dome was completely renewed.
That's how it works
The light of the lighthouse burns for two seconds and then turns off for two seconds. The lamps and the glass stand still, but a aperture turns around that shields or releases the light for two seconds. In the lighthouse there is still a regular lighthouse keeper present, but the tower works fully automatic. You can buy souvenirs from the viewing platform next to the tower.
